A child that suffers from autism will likely become very unreasonable with you if you interrupted their routine. For some reason they tend to have some of these very boring routines that they often perform throughout the day, and if you got in their way, the child would scream and raise some serious highwater. I had no idea what autism was all about until I saw a number of movies on the subject back in the 90s. First there was this movie by Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, where Hoffman was the sick one; and then there was also this movie I believe it was Mercury Rising, by Bruce Willis and some other young chap at the time. It distressed me to think that people suffered that much; I really do wish something could be done for them. Thankfully, with the level of advancement in medical technology, a solution might not be too far off. You will do well to have the level of intelligence of your kid tested once they have been diagnosed to suffer from autism. They often behave in a way different from other people talk about an understatement! but it by no means is a conclusion on how bright they might be. Undaunted by Flurry the Penguin’s taller height and his own diminutive one, 20-month-old Kyle Dao of Diamond Bar wrapped his small arms around the costumed character and laughed while snowballs flew around the children’s play area at the city of Diamond Bar’s annual Winter Snowfest.
“He loves Santa Claus, too,” said his mother, Jenny Feng, as Kyle furiously hugged Flurry and his dad Daniel Dao snapped photographs of the encounter in Pantera Park.
Kyle obviously loved music, too, demonstrating his feeling by instantly dancing as the Showbiz Kids fascinated audiences with spirited songs and dances.
Tykes to teens enjoyed the Jan. 16 wintry extravaganza staged by the city’s Community Services Department and coordinated by Andee Tarazon.
Nearly 8,000 children crowded into the city park and filled it with laughter and wintertime fun not usually available to children in sunny California.
It was definitely a day for young California citizens – from not- shy-at-all Kyle and 18-month-old Ethan Quesada of Pomona to 10-year- old hula dancer Caitlin Rivas and Diamond Bar High senior Yolanda Gong.
Youth of all ages and adventurous adults filed into the park so they could play in 80,000 pounds of snow, make crafts, eat hot dogs, nachos and funnel cakes and enjoy live entertainment by equally enthusiastic children.
Bundled in layers of clothes, mittens, hats and scarves to keep warm, children rolled around in snow, scooped the icy stuff into snowballs and slid down snow-drenched hillsides on sleds.
Yolanda, 17, was probably the warmest person in the park, her face and body invisible beneath the Flurry suit she wore.
“I volunteered to do this again because I wanted to conquer the heat,” Yolanda said, laughing inside the suit. “It’s really warm in here, but I’m a Leo. Leos help as much as we can wherever we’re needed.”
Diamond Bar High Leo Club past member Gurpreet Singh, 20, now a Cal State Fullerton biochemistry major, and member Jennifer Tran, 17, served as the “voice” for Flurry with curious children to keep the illusion of a real penguin alive. Other Leos manned game and food booths, served as an extra safety net for children careening down the snow-covered hillside and played with children making snowmen.
“We’re happy about this program because people are having such a good time. We need more good times these days,” Jennifer asserted.
Joshua Townsell, 1, was fine posing for pictures with Flurry as long he was in the safe, maternal arms of Brandy Townsell of Chino and his father, Jason Townsell, big sister Taya and brother Brandon, 3, were within touching – and rescuing – reach.
Michelle Curts and Elizabeth San Martin became fast friends while both taught at Kellogg Polytechnic Elementary School in Pomona. Their friendship expanded to include their spouses and children – information technology technician Chuck Curts, 2-year-old Michael and Lauren Curts, 3, and insurance agent Adrian San Martin Sr., Adrian Jr., 4 and Aaron, 2.
The toddlers – with the helping hands of Los Angeles County firefighter Kevin Chaney, Capt. Manuel “Manny” Ramos and engineer Frank Garcia from Diamond Bar’s Station 121 to lift them – checked out the bright red fire engine drawing girls and boys before they dashed off to snow play.
Michael, Lauren, young Adrian and Aaron giggled as their parents pinned junior firefighter badges onto their shirts. Ethan and his grandmother, Gladys Quesada, created their own duet mimicking the sound of fire engine sirens.
Children appreciatively applauded peers performing on the park’s portable stage.
Caitlin, a fifth-grade honor student at Buena Vista Arts Integrated School in Montclair, started dancing when she was 3. Now 10, her small swaying hips and hands easily kept pace with mellow movements by adult dancer Brandy Townsell for Da Hula Studio’s Polynesian dances’ presentation.
